3 Ways to Find Related Keywords and Improve Your SEO Strategy While Doing It

The first step to any successful SEO strategy is selecting the right keywords. Unfortunately, that’s often easier said than done.

If you’re like many marketers, the first keywords you thought of were accurate descriptions of your company’s products and services—but they also described hundreds (if not thousands) of other companies’ offerings. The competition for these keywords is simply too high, and optimizing for them would be unlikely to get positive results.

Instead, you need to identify longer, more specific keywords (called “long tail keywords”) with clearer intent. If you’re new to SEO, this may sound impossible, but there are plenty of tools designed to help you accomplish just that.

1. Identify long-tail keywords with Ubersuggest

One of the best tools for identifying long tail keyword opportunities is Ubersuggest. If you already have a decent list of broad match keywords, this can be a great way to expand upon them. Simply type one of your possible keywords, select your language and country, and hit “Suggest.”

You’ll then receive an alphabetical list of common searches including your original keyword. Depending on its popularity, there may be several thousand results.

 

Not all of the suggestions will be directly relevant to your business, but many of them should be. We recommend that you keep track of possible opportunities in a spreadsheet.

Repeat this process with all of your broad keywords to get a list of targeted, quality keywords that you can use on your site. At this point, you’ll have a few hundred keywords to research, and even more potential keywords to target!

2. Narrow down your list with the Google Keyword Planner

Now that you have a giant list of possible keywords, you’ll need to narrow them down to a more manageable list. There are many tools that can help you do this, but for simplicity’s sake, we’ll use Google AdWords Keyword Planner. It’s easy to use (especially if you have past experience with AdWords), and even better—it’s free.

After logging into AdWords, click “Get search volume data and trends”.

Now, you can enter the long-tail keywords you discovered in Ubersuggest, either by copy-and-pasting them or uploading a spreadsheet.

Click “Get search volume,” and you’ll be able to easily see the average monthly searches for each keyword, as well as the level of competition for each. Competition is determined by the number of advertisers bidding on each keyword in AdWords, so although the data doesn’t directly come from organic results, it’s a good indicator of how many other companies are using each word or phrase.

As you go through your options, your goal should be to identify keywords that have a high search volume but low competition. This combination means that although many people are searching for that keyword, not many advertisers are paying attention to it—and that’s a great opportunity for your company.

If you have a lot of keyword ideas, you can make this process easier by clicking “Customize your search” in the sidebar and limiting your results to only keywords with low competition. Then, sort the remaining keywords by average monthly searches, and you’ll see your best possible options right at the top.

Once you’re satisfied with your keywords, we recommend downloading all of the information from Keyword Planner to a spreadsheet for future reference.

3. Create content to match the keywords

Now that you have a solid list of related keywords, you’ll need to determine the best ways to incorporate them throughout your site. And as simple as it may seem to just add them to your existing pages, this is only a good idea of your current content covers the topic of the keywords.

In most cases, this means you’ll need to create content to fit the keywords. And although researching and writing the kind of pages that Google and readers appreciate requires extra time and energy, it will help your SEO strategy succeed in the long run.

 

Not only that, but writing and publishing original content is an effective strategy for many reasons. And when you use keywords that already have a high search volume, you’re much more likely to see positive results.

Incorporate your related keywords into your content marketing strategy as topics for blog posts and evergreen content, and you’ll be well on your way to establishing your company online.
